OUR EXPERIENCES
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center is a community-based nonprofit that provides over 25 programs in Education, Hunger Relief, and Health & Wellness. We have a multitude of volunteer opportunities across our programs, working with clients of all ages to engage with the community here in Newport County. We also offer community events open to everyone that travelers are welcome to attend.

ABOUT US
Founded in 1922 and renamed in honor of Dr. King in 1968, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center is a central service provider for at-risk individuals, families, and seniors. An independent nonprofit, the MLK Community Center fights hunger, promotes health, educates young and school-aged children, supports families, and engages seniors. Our mission is to nourish, educate, and support Newport County residents to improve their economic, social, and physical well-being.

IMPACT
All of our programs are free and open to all in the community. We offer breakfast six days a week, lunch three days a week, and monthly community dinners. We host exercise classes such as yoga, strength training, and tai chi. We also host art classes, senior lunch & learn, and community concerts in the summer months. These community programs are meant to offer fun, healthy activities to Newport residents without financial barriers. Anyone is welcome to attend these events or volunteer. Volunteer opportunities also exist for our Hunger Relief programs. We have a Food Pantry, a Mobile Food Pantry, Free Produce, food deliveries to homebound residents, daily breakfasts, weekly lunches, and more. Our Education programs include Preschool, After School, and Summer Camp. Many businesses choose to volunteer at the MLK for team-building activities when they travel to Newport for conferences. We distribute over 1.4 million meals a year and help over 8,700 people annually with these accessible, vital programs.
